Dr. Lemuel N.M. Cook m. Alvira Lassiter (Elvira Lasater)

Lemuel was born on 15 Aug 1815 in Silver Springs, Wilson Co TN. Died Feb1896 in Wilson Co TN--went out in a snow storm at age 80 to see a patient, and got pneumonia and died. . Lemuel Nicholson Mann Cook, MD (aka L.N.M. Cook). His father saddled two horses and rode him to Louisville to enroll in the Medical Colege. Green Babb rode home leading "Nick"s horse. Then in 1838 he lead the same horse back to Louisville and they rode home together. First practiced medicine in Silver Springs, TN on Wilson Co. Always had a horse saddled and ready to go for emergencies. Active supporter of Methodist church. Member of Masons, Knights of Pythias and Odd Fellows. Was elected trustee from 1876-1884. Would campaign for office by riding around (a smal man with a scraggly beard who would say I'm Doc Cook I want you to vote for me but if you dont want to, you can go to hell,...giddyup.")

From the Ella Cook genealogy: "Early in the war between the states, Dr Cook who did not believe in slavery freed the slaves thst had come to him as an inheritance of his wife fro father, Enos Lassiter. She, Elvira, agreed with him to free the salves but not one of them left the farm and Dr Cook had to feed and clothe the negroes he had freed in addition to providing for his own family." BUT, there is a Wilson Co 26 Dec 1860 deed by LMN Cook selling a slave to another man for $900 (a 35 year old woman named Lucinda and her son Hatton)...

The Union army thought he was using his position as physician to inform the Confederates of troop movements so they put a price on his head. His friends located a hiding place for him in the caves along the banks of the Cumberland River and the local women fed him Thus it hapened that Green Babb Cook, an old man of more than 70 years with a peg leg, was left as sole protector of the Cook farm during the Union occupation. They took all the food but Green Babb said he'd kill them if they tried to take the last "hoe cake."

From Goodspeed's History:

"Lemuel N. M. Cook, M.D., was born in Wilson County, TN., August 15, 1875, and is a son of Green and Mary A. (Nicholson) Cook, North Carolinians, born in 1788 and 1787, and died in 1875 and 1853, respectively. The father was a soldier in the war of 1812, and was married in 1814. He was a farmer by occupation. Our subject attended the common schools, and his medical education was obtained in the Medical College of Louisville, KY., from which institution he graduated in 1838. he was married, April 16, 1845, to Alvira Lassiter, daughter of Enos Lassiter. She was born in Tennessee in 1823 and died February 26, 1883, leaving eight children: E.K., Chloe N. (wife of Prof. Kennedy), Sclurin (Wife of J. P. B ashaw), Joseph L., Ella (wife of Prof. B.M. Macee), Mary, William, and Emma (Wi fe of H.L. Pickett). In 1876 Dr. Cook was elected trustee in Wilson county, and served in that capacity four successive terms, returning to his home in 1884; He is an old and highly esteemed citizen, and is a supporter of Democratic principles. He belongs to the Masonic lodge, and also of the K. of P. lodge No.20 of Lebanon, and the I.O.O.F. He belongs to the Methodist Episcopal Church South."

Married Alvira Lassiter (b 24 Aug 1824) on 16 Apr 1845 in place. (See Genealogy Notes for Lassiter Family.) Elvira was born (and married) at the Fairview Plantation in Sumner CO TN.
