AND HISTORICAL CONTEXT
REGIONS:
Who's Who
- North
Midwest
- Hamlin Garland
- Caroline
Kirkland
As with much local color
writing, A
New Home, Who'll Follow? is a thinly
disguised autobiography. Kirkland's husband moved his
genteel wife and family to the sticks of Michigan; her
account of the experience is ironic, funny, smart and
complex.
- Joseph
Kirkland
Caroline's son also tried his hand
at local color writing, producing a number of texts
which critics of American Literature have catagorized
as naturalist in their views. I hope to include
selections from 'Zury at some point in
the future.
- James
Whitcomb Riley
His house
in Indiana has been preserved as a museum; for a
vicarous trip you can visit their website. They have
also included some samples of his poetry.
