1. Elizabeth Logan WALLACE m. James Anthony COOK

Elizabeth Logan Wallace was born on 10 Nov 1908 in Albemarle Co, VA. She died in Nov 2001 in Huntington, Cabell, WV. She attended school at the National Cathedral School in Washington DC and was a graduate of Marshall University in Huntington, WV. Lived in Huntington WV most of her life.

Married 11 Sep 1936 to James Anthony Cook (b.13 Aug 1907 in TN, d. 25 Aug 2002 in WV). James A Cook worked in the J.L. Cook family hardware business in Huntington WV. (see Cook family geneaogy notes). They have two living children.

 

2. Frances Bodine GIBSON m. Col George Seldon WALLACE

Frances Bodine Gibson was born on 5 Nov 1881 in Albemarle VA. She died on 25 Jun 1951 in Huntington WV.

Married Col. George Seldon Wallace on Oct 4, 1905 in Albemarle, VA. Died 28 Apr 1963 in Huntington WV. He served in WWI and practiced law in Huntington, WV. In 1930, Colonel and Frances are living with their children Frances (age 23), Champe (age 22), Elizabeth (age 21), Margaret (age 19), William (age 13), and George Jr (age 11). Col. Wallace wrote several fine genealogy books. (see Wallace family genealogy notes).

2. Champe Carter Wallace (b 21 Nov 1907) married Edward Huddleston Haynes on 31 May 1947. Champe died in Sep 1976 in Texas.

6. George Selden Wallace Jr (b 22 May 1918). Married Elizabeth Caniff on 25 Jul 1942 in Evansville, IN. Died 4 Aug 1990.

 

3. Rev John Shackleford GIBSON m. Ilicia Wheeler DAVIS

Rev. John Shackelford Gibson was born on 22 Dec 1853 in Port Tobacco, Charles Co, VA. He died on 4 Dec 1912 in Virginia, buried in Trenton NJ. He was educated at Hanover Academy in Hanover Co VA. He also attended school at the Central University in Lexington KY and the University of Cincinnati. He attended Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, Virginia from 1872-1875. His first assignment was as a missionary to the Diocese of Kentucky 1875-1879. He was then an assistant pastor at St. Michael's Church in Trenton, NJ from 1879-80, missionary in southern Ohio from 1880-1882, pastor of Nelson parish in West Virginia from 1882-1890, pastor of the Trinity Episcopal Church in Fredericksburg, VA from 1890-92. He took over as the minister of Trinity Episcopal Church in Huntington WV from 1892-1912. He had just accepted a new ministry position back in Virginia at Christ Church in Gordonsville when he died of a heart attack. He was buried in Trenton, NJ. At the time of his death, the Southern Churchman publication said of him that he was "a devout Churchman and a scholarly preacher.; noted especially, for his missionary zeal..." In the book "Trinity Church, something of its story" by James Haworth, it is said that his resignation acceptance was accompanied by this statement: He has been a power for good in this city. His wise and intelligent administration of its affiars has placed this parish among the strong ones of the diocese, and he leaves it with all of its obligations fully met and discharged,".

1. Frances Bodine Gibson (b 5 Nov 1881) see above

2. Rev. James Davis Gibson (b Oct 1883) James Davis became a clergyman like his father and grandfather. He worked as rector in the same church as his grandfather (Trinity Church in Covington, KY). He married Mary Leadbetter. In 1930, the family is listed in Fort Mitchell, Kenton Co KY: James was working as an Episcopal clergyman and living with his wife Mary and their children John Gibson age 19, Janet Gibson age 17, James Gibson age16, Douglas Gibson age 11 and Philip Gibson age 8. Rev James died on 5 Mar 1932 in Covington KY.

3. Anna Gibson (b Sep 1885) Anna married Lieut Col J.M.(John Mitchell) Willis, who worked with the Medical Corp, US Army. Stationed in Fort Snelling, MN at one point. In 1930, Ann and her husband were living on the Ft Leavenworth Base in Kansas, with their son John Willis Jr , age 14, who was born in the Phillipine Islands. This family lived in San Antonio, TX at one point.

4. Dr. John Shackelford Gibson Jr. (b Jan 1887), John Shackelford Jr. attended the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, became a Major in Medical Corp, US Army, and married Patty Braxton. In 1930 John is listed as a Surgeon at the "Government Hospital" in Washington DC. He is living with wife Patty and a daughter Eleanor Gibson. Died 28 Jul 1962 in Atlanta GA, buried at Arlington.

5. Philip Pendleton Gibson (b Jun 1890). Became a prominent lawyer in Huntington. Attended Washington & Lee University in Lexington-- in 1913-14 involved in establishing Omicron Delta Kappa, Philip Pendleton Gibson, Pi Kappa Alpha, president of student government and editor of the student newspaper; He married Morrell Sanford. In 1930, Philip and Morrell are listed in Huntington, Cabell Co WV. Died 8 Nov 1963 in Siler City, North Carolina.

 

4. Rev Isaac GIBSON m. Ann Sophia WINGERD

Rev. Isaac Gibson was born on 30 Jan 1828 at Bowling Green, Flint Hill in Rappahanock Co VA. He died 12 Jun 1906 in Norristown, Montgomery Co, PA. At age 22 he began his career in ministry, first with the Methodist Church and then later with the Episcopal Church. Rev Isaac Gibson served as minister for churches in Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky and Pennsylvania. He served as rector of the Old Fork Church in Hanover Co VA. Other church jobs included the following--1866: Asst Rector of Zion Church in Charlestown, WV. 1866-1868: Rector of St. Martin's Parish, VA. 1868-70: Danville, KY; 1870-71: Calvary Church, Louisville, KY; 1871-72: Trinity Church in Covington, KY; then to St Johns in Norristown from 1872 until his death in 1906; he was made Rector Emeritus there in 1898. He is listed in the Norristown City Directory 1888-1893, residing at 27 E. Airy and also 17 E. Elm St in Norristown, PA. The Southern Churchman said in his obituary that he "was the author of several works on the Higher Criticism, the latest, "Reasons for the Higher Criticism" being well-known." Author: Leading Higher Critics on the Origin of the Levitical Law, 1894; The Pentateuch and Joshua, 1895; Reasons for the Higher Criticisms of the Hexateuch, 1897.

Married Anna Sophia Wingard (or Wingerd) in 1853. (see Wingard family genealogy notes)

The 1860 census shows the family in Sheperdstown, Jefferson Co. VA: Isaac age 32, minister, Annie age 28, John age 6, Ethel age 4, Muscoe age 1, and also Annie's younger siblings Margaret age 19 and George age 15)

The 1870 census for Danville Boyle KY p 160: Isaac 42, Minister, Anna 38, John 15, Esther 14, Musco 11, Delia 8, and boarders: Joseph Wallace 23 clerk in bank, Winnie Boyle age 9 black, servant, John Holmes 41 carpenter.

1. John Shackelford Gibson (b 22 Dec 1853) in Port Tobacco, Charles Co MD. See above.

2. Ethel Wingard Gibson (b 4 Feb 1856-24 Dec 1934) In 1930 census, Ethel and Delia are residing together unmarried (ages 63 and 57) in Norristown, PA. Ethel's occupation is difficult to read--commercial (something to do with) dry goods.

3. Muscoe Minor Gibson (b 6 Feb 1859) in Blacksburg WV. Lawyer in Norristown, PA. Died 31 Dec 1932. Married Amy Whitton. In 1930, he is listed in the census as a lawyer, age 60, living with his son J. Whitton, age 20 and a servant. Daughter: Amy Bertha Gibson 3 Jul 1897-22 Nov 1907. Other Gibson gravestone includes: J Whitton 1899-1977, Nellie Dear 1900-1980, and David Cushman 1952-1987?? Who is David Cushman?

I recently received a note from the grandson of Joseph Whitton Gibson --Tom Gibson in York PA--along with some photos of Rev Isaac's gravesite!

"The law firm which was for many years Larzelere & Gibson, Mr. Larzelere's partner being Muscoe M. Gibson, son of Rev. Isaac Gibson, has within a few years been enlarged further by the addition of Gilbert R. Fox, also of Norristown, the firm name being Larzelere, Gibson & Fox, in which working shape it is prepared to take up any and all legal business that is presented, and carry it to a successful issue. From: "Ellwood Roberts' Biographical Annals, 1904: Montgomery Co, PA Vol I - Part 1: pp. 1-19."

"MUSCOE M. GIBSON, son of the Rev. Isaac Gibson, was born at Blacksburg, W. Va., February 6, 1859. He acquired his education at the Norristown High School, at the Treemount Seminary, under Professor John W. Loch, and at Lafayette College, where he was graduated in 1880. He studied law in theoffice of Benjamin E. Chain, Esq., was admitted to the bar of Montgomery County in June, 1883, and then located in business in Norristown, where he is now in practice," from: "History: Local: Chapter XXXVI : The Bench and Bar - Part II : Bean's 1884 History of Montgomery Co, PA"

4. Delia Pendleton Gibson (b 23 Nov1862 (?) - 10 Dec ???) In 1930, living with Ethel in Norristown, unmarried. Occupation is listed as music teacher.

 

5. Minor Winn GIBSON m. Elizabeth Pendleton SHACKELFORD

Minor Winn Gibson 7 Apr 1797-1877 Lawyer with Hon. John Shackelford of Va. Minor Winn Gibson was born in Virginia. He was a clergyman, but I don't know where. He died in Lonaconing, Allegheny Co, Maryland.

Married Elizabeth Pendleton Shackelford (b 14 Jun 1800 Cleveland, Culpeper Co, VA; died 8 Feb 1874 in Lonaconing) daughter of Hon John Shackelford, on16 (or 10??) Jun 1819. (see Shackelford family genealogy notes).

The1820 census shows Minor and Elizabeth as newlyweds living in Berryville, Frederick Co, VA.

In 1830, they are living in Culpeper Co VA with five children.

By 1840, they are in Rappahannock Co with a household of 3 adults and 10 children.

I couldn't locate them in the1850 cenus.

In 1860, they are living in Washington DC with Minor age 63, Elizabeth age 60, Moses age 23, James age 21 and Lucy age 36.

In 1870, the family is in Lonaconing, Allegheny Co MD (p. 456A): Minor is listed as retired minister at age 73, Elizabeth is age 70, Lucy is teaching school at age 47, James is a store clerk at age 30, and a 60 y.o. minister named A. Rankin is living with them at that time.

There is reference to Minor Winn Gibson writing genealogical articles in the Richmond Times about the Shackleford family history, but I haven't been able to find them yet.

2. Lucy E. Gibson (b ~1824) employed as school teacher, didn't marry. In 1860, age 36 living with parents in Washington DC. In 1870, age 47 living with parents, teaching school in Lonaconing MD.

3. Mary Ellen Gibson (b ?) Married Dr. James Madison Porter of Frostburg, MD. Two children: Thomas Glissan Porter (b ~1849, lived in Frostburg) and Lucy Porter Teddy (b ~1852, lived in Piedmont). Mary died young and Dr Porter remarried twice before he died in 1890.

5. Alcinda Esther Gibson (b 1830) Married Dr. G.E. (Ellis) Porter of Frostburg, MD in 1853. Lived in Lonaconing. Had nine children, 6 of whom were deceased in 1889 when Dr. Porter died. Alcinda filed for widow's veterans benefits in 1890 in Lonaconing (dist 18).

6. John St. Pierre Gibson (b ?) Became a doctor and married Mary Wallace of Augusta, GA. ??: Virginia herald (Fredericksburg, Va.) Title Married- At Valley View, on December 20, 1827, by Rev. George A. Smith, Dr. St. Pierre Shackelford, of Culpeper County, to Miss Elvira Gibson, youngest daughter of William Gibson of Fauquier county. (p. 3, c. 4) Publication Wednesday, February 6, 1828.

7. Moses Gibson (b ~1837) In 1860 he is age 23 living with parents in Washington DC.

8. James Green Gibson (b ~1839) In 1860 he is age 21 living with his parents in Washington DC. In 1870 he is age 30 and working as a store clerk in Lonaconing, living with his parents.

Betsy Withers Winn 13 Aug 1778 at "Eden"-13 Aug 1854, Daughter of Minor Winn, (1730-1813, Grandfather of Stonewall Jackson, Virginia herald (Fredericksburg, Va.) Title-- Died- On October 5, at his seat in Fauquier County, Capt. Minor Winn, in the 57th year of his age. (p. 3, c. 2) Publication Wednesday, November 10, 1813.), and Elizabeth Withers (married 17 Oct 1765) Source: * The Winns of Fairfield County, by Buford S. Chappell MD, R.L. Bryan Co.,Columbia SC, 1975. Betsy was first married to Thomas Neale. Sister to Margaret Neal,, grandmother to Stonewall Jackson.

Isaac Gibson 1735-1798 Born in Upperville, Va. At age 20, Trooper in Prince William Colonial Brigade

Marched with General Braddock to Fort Duquense in 1755. Was paid with 1,320 lbs of tobacco for his services in the military.

Married Miss Jamison, maybe Esther.

Children:

Moses 5 Jun 1768 d 10 Jun 1837 married Betsy Withers Winn, dau of Minor and Elizabeth Withers Winn.

Isaac? never married, merchant in Alexandria, VA (or married Susannah Foushee on 30 Dec 1798 in Fairfax Co?)

Moses (married Lydia Leonard 15 Feb 1775 in Loudoun CO?) Ruth Jonathon, Aaron, Dinah, Rachel, Susannah (married Moses Hunt) and Jesse listed as children of Moses.

Married Miss St. Clare GGFather of Hon. John Bannister Gibson, Chief Justice, Penna. Supreme Court

(from the Gibsons and Related Families by Linder: John Gibson line. He espoused the cause of the Quakers, and emigrated to America in 1696., He m. __St Clare. One of his sons settled in Lancaster Co.,Pa. and is suppose to be the ancestor of Gen. John Gibson and his famous brother, George Gibson, captain of "Gibsons Lambs", and colonel of the Ninth Virginia Regiment during the Rev. War. His son Moses b. ca 1700, m. Elsie Janney and settled in Fauquier Co. Va. Records of his descendants are carried into the late 19th century.")

Settled in Philadelphia in 1696. Espoused the cause of the Hulsell Quakers

One of his sons settled in Lancaster Co PA and is the ancestor of Gen John Gibson and his famous brother, George Gibson, captian of Gibson's Lambs.
